It has become a good tradition at Radiophysics Faculty to organize different events in English. The scientific conferences have been held since 2008. On April, 19 in the framework of the project ‘Development of the foreign language competence of TSU students’ the First Students’ Conference of Natural Sciences was carried out. The Radiophysics Session ‘Current Issues of Radiophysics’ under the auspices of Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Viktor V. Dyomin and Vice-Rector for International Affairs Artyom Yu. Rykun, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Radiophysics Faculty professors was held.

We asked the members of the organizing committee about their impressions.

Olga V. Kharapudchenko, Senior Lecturer of the English Department of natural-science and physicomathematics faculties, the Faculty of Foreign Languages: This project is very important since Radiophysics faculty is a dynamically developing faculty. It is a home to internationally recognized researchers. The students specialize in different fields of science: radiophysics, photonics, optics, space physics, etc.  Specialists in these areas should be able to take part in professional discussions, make reports on the research results at international conferences, write different kinds of letters, abstracts and papers for publication in leading international journals, use various reading strategies to gather and analyze information. In addition, radiophysicists should be able to participate in an international project, take internships abroad. Thus, the English language is an instrument of professional communication. Moreover, according to many surveys, 80 % of his /her working hours an engineer is engaged in communication. So, communicative skills are demanded by employers. In this connection, the role of the English language as an academic discipline cannot be overestimated. But in learning and teaching the EL focus should be shifted from knowledge to competence. The first-year students showed not only the knowledge of Grammar, pronunciation, but their competence in using the language for professional communication.

Tatiana O. Podianova, Chair of the Radiophysics Session, Lecturer of the English Department of natural-science and physicomathematics faculties, the Faculty of Foreign Languages: This Conference is organized to share experience and passion for science. Radiophysics sets objectives first and then seeks the means of achieving them and the rapid pace of technology demands young specialists in this field. Fresh specialists should have an understanding what might soon be relevant — and what the employers can be expecting from them. The Radiophysics Students’ Section in the framework of the First Students’ Conference of Natural Sciences will feature presentations by Radiophyics faculty students who are studying the technologies with the potential to reshape the world from electronics and manufacturing to sales and transportation.

In the Conference there were 160 participants.
